VAST General Meeting Minutes

February 5, 2004

The meeting was called to order by President Jo Williams. She commented that, with the recent change to the By-Laws, minutes of the previous meeting would no longer be printed in Vision, the newsletter for the Visual Art Society of Texas. Members will be able to review the minutes on the organization's website, http://ntaal.org. For those that had read the minutes Evalyn Coulter moved that these be approved, second was made by Nancy Donley and members present voted approval.

Treasurer Nancy Donley reported $5,568.89 in the checking account and current CD balance of $5,390.67.

Herbert Holl, director for Greater Denton Arts Council, our umbrella organization, gave a short talk to acquaint current members of Visual Art Society of Texas with the history and activities of GDAC, which is 33 years old, and VAST, formerly North Texas Area Art League, which is even older. VAST receives grant funds each year from GDAC. Holl stated that the two groups look forward to a continued partnership of more and better things in the future. More information available by calling (940) 382-ARTS or

Spring Juried Exhibit chair Deanna Wood passed a sign up sheet for volunteers to be available to accept hand delivered pieces as they come in for the show. The slides are currently with the juror and notices of acceptance will be mailed February 23. There were 404 slides of work entered from 152 artists. Millie Johnson passed a sign up sheet for additional refreshments for the reception for the Spring Show.

There will be a show of the work of Lorraine Hayes at the Visual Art League of Lewisville, reception Saturday, February 7, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The show is open 1:00 - 4:00 p.m Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays and will run through February.

Workshop chair Ruth Keefer announced that there are two slots open for the Sharon Zimmerman Watercolor Workshop. Contact Keefer for more information or to get on the waiting lists.

President Williams reported that the Executive Board is entertaining the idea of putting together a calendar for VAST. Work to be included for each month would be chosen by jury. It could be a hanging wall calendar or a month-at-a-glance. Asked to show interest by show of hands, about 10 members were more in favor of the hanging wall version. Based on information already gathered the wall calendars would cost about $6 and would be sold for $10 to $15 each. They will be for the 2005 year. We would possibly accept advertising to help defray costs and assist this project as a money raiser.

Executive Director Ingrid Scobie had show information from Bonham, Texas, as well as other art related information to share at break.

First Vice President Ruth Keefer introduced the speaker for the evening Don Schol and his wife, Pam Burnley-Schol, who assisted him with the slide presentation that formed part of his lecture. Schol, a professor of Art and currently the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs for the School of Visual Arts, UNT, was drafted into the army in 1966 immediately after graduation from the University of Texas at Austin. He shared his experiences as part of a four-man team of artists/soldiers who were given the task of recording the war in Viet Nam with illustrations for the Office of Military History. He felt compelled to keep his military experiences a secret for many years so as not to suffer the prejudice of his colleagues and students due to the unpopular aspects of the war. Schol's slides showed some of the team members and also some of his current work that pertains to the Viet Nam experience. He is currently working on a series of woodcut prints on the war that he plans to publish in book form. After a period of questions and answers at the end of the program the meeting broke for refreshments and visiting. The Monthly Members Mini Show was not held due to lack of entries for the evening. After the break there was a drawing for the $50 Voertman's door prize which was won by Alice Miller.

Membership chair Vidya Kagal announced that there were 27 members and 10 visitors present with one new member, Sharmon Suit.
